Newcastle University UCU is pushing for a national campaign…

Last night our branch hosted a meeting open to other branches over the pay ballot and the Crisis in HE funding. It attracted many branches like ours that face job losses and cuts. It included Dundee University that had heard news that very day of £35m cuts, which will lead to course closures and jobs losses. We received solidarity from other branches in our campaign against cuts here. There was as general consensus that voting in the consultation over the pay deal was imperative to send a signal to the employers that we will not accept their cuts and to the government that the fees-model of funding is broken and needs urgent attention.

On Tuesday you should have received an online consultation on the national pay deal. Please vote against the pay deal. Turnout matters. [Top tip: if you want to find this quickly, search for civica in your inbox]. For fuller explanation of the deal UCU – HE offer 2024/25: member consultative ballot

Our campaign continues

  • More meetings in sections took place last week. The consensus is that the cuts is having a devastating effect upon staff morale and the UEB is responsible for the mess. Cuts should start at the top.
  • We met with the Students Union and plan to a staff-student joint meeting against the bankrupt model of tuition fees.
  • We continue to work with other campus unions to have a united front against the cuts, UNISON colleagues attended last night’s meeting.
  • If you have not, please, sign our open letter that casualised staff should not bear the brunt of the cuts here. https://tinyurl.com/5b6m9kt5
